Tahr: New Zealand's other unique mountain game. Released in 1904 around the Mt Cook region, the original liberation spread along the main divide until in the 1970s they numbered in the tens of thousands. Helicopter hunting reduced the numbers to around 5000, and recognising the unique status of the only free ranging, huntable Tahr in the world the "Tahr Management Plan" gave them limited protection.
